Purpose
The association was founded to contribute to the development of arbitration in Türkiye, to raise the ethical, scholarly and professional standards of arbitrators, to broaden the use of national and international arbitration practice, and to foster solidarity among arbitrators.
To that end the association pursues, in particular, mutual assistance and solidarity among arbitrators and the protection of their rights and interests. It works with the Department of Arbitration established within the General Directorate of Legal Affairs of the Ministry of Justice, the Insurance Arbitration Commission, the Istanbul Arbitration Centre and other arbitral institutions established or to be established in Türkiye, in order to broaden the use of arbitration, to raise public awareness of it and to strengthen confidence in it.
A further objective is to promote the choice of Türkiye as the seat of arbitration and of Turkish law as the law applicable to the merits in disputes with a foreign element. Encouraging foreign arbitral institutions to open representative offices and branches in Türkiye falls within the same purpose.
Training and professional development
The association organises conferences, seminars and similar educational events for arbitrators; develops training standards; and runs certification and mentoring programmes. Programmes for young arbitrators and working groups on particular subjects are also part of its activity.
Establishing professional ethical rules governing the arbitral process and the conduct of arbitrators, and preparing guidance and rules on ethical principles, are among the association's priorities.
Scholarship and publishing
The association carries out publishing activity in the form of periodicals, books and bulletins; supports scholarly research in the field of arbitration; and compiles and publishes statistics on arbitration. The Statutes also provide for the creation and publication of a descriptive directory, index or database of members.
Informational, promotional, public-communication and audiovisual work is carried out, in accordance with the applicable legislation, in order to raise public awareness of arbitration.
National and international cooperation
The association cooperates with the relevant public authorities, conducts joint work with foreign arbitrators, and may join associations and organisations active in arbitration abroad. Cooperation with institutions and professional bodies active in the field, including the ICC, ISTAC, VIAC, LCIA, ICCA and CIArb, is a standing area of work.
Funding and projects
In furtherance of its purpose the association may establish a commercial enterprise, run projects, and apply to national and international grants and funds. Donations and assistance in cash or in kind may be accepted from within Türkiye and from abroad, in accordance with the notification requirements and procedures laid down in the applicable legislation; fundraising activity may be carried out subject to obtaining the necessary permissions.
Social events intended to strengthen the ties and solidarity among members also form part of the association's activity.
